Environmental impacts of print and online media

Kauppalehti onlineIn collaboration with Alma Media, one of Finland’s major media companies, CESC and VTT Finland analysed the environmental performance of three Alma Media print products and their respective online services. The life cycle assessment included many different aspects such as the environmental impacts of editorial work.

The study shows that Alma Media online newspapers have a lower total environmental impact than the printed. However, when considering the time people actually spend reading the printed newspaper or the electronic version, the printed version is in favour.

Further results and details of the study will be presented at the Alma Media event “Towards sustainable media” at Finlandia Hall on 25 January 2012 (9:00-11:30 ). Åsa Moberg from CESC will attend the panel discussion at the seminar.

SEB’12 Conference: 3-5 September 2012

As a member of the organising team, CESC welcomes to the Fourth International Conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings 3-5 September 2012 in Stockholm.

SEB’12 is a partnership between the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (with representatives from the Centre for Sustainable Communications and  the School of Information and Communication Technology as co-organisers) and KES International. Following the success of earlier SEB conferences, SEB’12 will feature presentations from world-class researchers, engineers and industrialists, working in a broad range of renewable energy and sustainability topics for the built environment. Applicable areas include technology for renewable energy and sustainability in the built environment; also optimisation and modeling techniques, information and communication technology usage, behaviour and practice.

Digitalt eller tryckt – vad är mest klimatsmart?

Grafiska Företagens Förbund och projektet “Power of Print” arragangerar idag ett frukostseminarium där temat är att titta på hur klimatpåverkan skiljer sig mellan tryckta och digitala medier. Till seminariet har Andreas Ösman från IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet bjudits in för att svara på frågor kring en ny studie som tagits fram på uppdrag av Power of Print. Bland annat har man tittat på vilken inverkan olika faktorer har på klimatpåverkan. Diskussioner kommer även att tas upp om hur val kan göras mer klimatsmarta när man köper eller konsumerar medier och det finns också möjlighet att ställa egna frågor under seminariet. Seminariet sänds live idag, torsdagen den 1 december 8.30 – 9.30 och det är också möjlighet att titta på seminariet i efterhand.

Vilket blir Sveriges mest hållbara varumärke 2012?

Över 100 varumärken undersöks årligen på den svenska marknaden och

görs utifrån perspektivet hållbar utveckling och syftar till att tydliggöra

betydelsen för företagen att arbeta affärsorienterat med sitt hållbarhetsarbete.

Till grund för undersökningen ligger tio principer från FN:s Global Compact.

Undersökningen genomförs av IDG Research i samarbete med Relation Capital

Partners och Novus Group.

Årets vinnare är Coop, vars samtliga butiker och stormarknader är KRAV-certifierade,

vilket innebär att de förutom att ha ett brett sortiment av ekologiska

produkter också har låtit personalen genomgå en utbildning om KRAV

och ekologisk produktion. Coop fraktar lastbilar med tåg, stödjer

Kooperationen Utan Gränser och Vi-skogen. Varje år delar de ut

Änglamarkspriset till personer som gjort viktiga insatser inom miljöområdet.

Coop deltar också ett projekt som syftar till att halvera ungdomsarbetslösheten

på tre år i Södertälje – Telge Tillväxt.

24 hours of hacking for the environment

The first Green Hackathon attracted over 30 participants to engage in developing innovations for environmental issues.

The Stockholm Green Hackathon took place 21-22 October 2011 at the former reactor hall R1 at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Eleven teams of coders created exciting prototypes, web services and mobile solutions for sustainability. The two winners were:

James Smith from England, who found an fun way of putting carbon emissions into Minecraft (see his Youtube video).

Petri Kola and Mikko Heikkinen from Finland, who built a Chrome extension automatically ”injecting” CO2 data into websites. With their tool “Remember Carbon”, browsing last-minute-flights will not just be about the price but also about the climate impact.

- Green Hackathon was a great way to learn from other people about how environmental information can be used. A hack is a smart approach to get people to sharing ideas and doing things, says Bianca Sayan from Sourcemap Inc., one of the participants.

Stockholm Green Hackathon was organized by the Centre for Sustainable Communications and EIT ICT Labs.

Utvecklare, forskare och studenter samlas i Reaktorhallen på KTH under helt ett dygn, den 21-22 oktober, för att delta i programmeringstävlingen Stockholm Green Hackathon. Under 24 timmar ska deltagarna samarbeta framför dataskärmarna för att skapa prototyper av webb- och IT-lösningar som ska gynna en hållbar framtid.

Lösningarna kan bestå av appar, mobiltjänster och webblösningar som har med miljö och hållbarhet att göra.

Syftet med Green Hackathon är att belysa den stora potentialen för ”öppen-data-principen”, som gör miljöfakta lättillgängligt, som en viktig grund för beslut kring hållbarhet i samhället. Green Hacker Green Hackathon arrangeras av KTH:s Centre for Sustainable Communications (CESC) och EIT ICT Labs.

Viktiga miljöfakta och analyser blir nu mer lättillgängliga och användarvänliga, tack vare det nya KTH-projektet Footprinted.org. - Den öppna databasen ger nya möjligheter för beslutsfattare att hitta aktuell miljöinformation, säger Jorge Zapico, doktorand vid KTH:s Centre for Sustainable Communications (CESC).

Kvantitativ miljöforskning är A och O för att rätt sorts långsiktiga beslut ska kunna fattas i miljöfrågor. Men forskningsresultat och analyser har alltför ofta förvarats i slutna, exklusiva databaser, vilket har krånglat till processerna för användning och formatering av forskningsresultaten.

- Vår nya, öppna, webbaserade tjänst är utformad för att förenkla processen – miljöinformation ska både vara lättillgänglig och användarvänlig, säger Jorge Zapico.

Genom Footprinted får användaren gratis tillgång till miljöforskningsresultat, och all data finns lagrad i ett enkelt och flexibelt format som lätt kan ändras i samband med utveckling av nya tjänster.

- Vem som helst kan skapa, presentera, dela och återanvända informationen, säger Jorge Zapico. Olika källor av forskningen presenteras öppet, och till skillnad från slutna databaser har inte Footprinted strategin att ge kundspecifika svar – allt är öppet för alla.

- Databasen är att betrakta som en samlingsplats för miljöinformation, förklarar Jorge Zapico.

I sin nuvarande version innehåller Footprinted livscykelanalyser av olika material, produkter och processer. I nästa utvecklingssteg ska tjänsten också innefatta motsvarande analyser gällande enskilda konsumentprodukter.

Footprinted är resultatet av forskning inom KTH:s projekt Data Driven Sustainability, och är i dagsläget tillgänglig i betaversion på www.footprinted.org. Projektet är ett samarbete mellan KTH:s Centre for Sustainable Communications, Sourcemap Inc. och MIT Media Lab.

CESC at World Newspaper Congress

Abstract

There is a fragmented approach to social sustainability in the literature, and this paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the meanings and interpretations of that concept while reviewing and discussing the social dimension of sustainability from the perspectives of two fields: urban development as well as companies and products. The analysis identifies commonalities and differences in the understanding of the conceptualization of social sustainability and helps to identify core aspects that cross disciplinary boundaries. The paper shows that compiling a list of comprehensive aspects that is representative of social sustainability is not straightforward, as interpretations are context dependant and aspects are often closely interconnected. Differences often occur because of variations in scoping and context, or whether or not a life cycle perspective is used. Nonetheless, there seems to be an underlying common understanding of what social sustainability is, and a set of key themes (social capital, human capital and well-being) is suggested as an alternative to put more specific measures and indicators in perspective. However, context-specific information is still necessary in practical applications.

Unleashing the power of green data

Environmental impact information is difficult to access, thus missing much of its potential influence on sustainability decisions. It is time to apply the concept of open data to environmental information.

Sustainability decisions need to rely on the results of quantitative environmental research. Commonly, these results are found in closed, often expensive databases based on proprietary software. Alternatively, environmental information is presented in text documents (pdf-files) which cannot be processed.

- Environmental impact information should be accessible and easy to use. That’s why we have developed Footprinted.org, says Jorge Zapico from the KTH Centre for Sustainable Communication (CESC).

Footprinted is a web-based service applying the concept of open linked data to environmental impact information. In Footprinted, environmental research results are available free of charge. Data is stored in a format that can easily be processed to develop new services on top of the data. Everybody can create, present, share and reuse the environmental impact information. Different sources of research are presented in a transparent way. Unlike closed databases Footprinted does not apply a unique answer approach.

- It is a bazaar of environmental impact information, rather than a cathedral, explains Jorge Zapico.

In its current version, Footprinted provides a repository of life cycle assessments of different materials, products and processes. The next step in Footprinted’s development is to include the footprints of individual consumer products.

Footprinted is the result of a design research process within the project Data Driven Sustainability and is currently available in beta version at www.footprinted.org. Footprinted is a collaboration between the KTH Centre for Sustainable Communications, Sourcemap Inc and MIT Media Lab. Footprinted is to be presented on 6 October 2011 at the EnviroInfo Conference in Ispra/Italy.

Green home cinema: Streaming better than P2P

Watching movies with an IPTV solution might be a greener choice than downloading with peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Researchers at KTH have for the first time calculated the climate impact of two popular ways of distributing movies.  

IPTV streaming services (Live TV, Video on Demand) are today provided by most major media companies. Peer-to-peer networks are an alternative way of distributing movies with many providers to choose from. A project at KTH analysed the climate impact of both technologies.

- Our object of study was a two hour movie with 3 Gigabytes distributed and watched in Sweden, says Elisabeth Hochschorner, researcher at the Centre for Sustainable Communications (CESC).

For both systems electricity demand for end user equipment was the main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The production of end user equipment turned out to be another significant impact factor. Comparing the two systems, P2P had a higher environmental impact, especially when upload speed was low.

- In P2P systems, each user is simultaneously up- and downloading which extends the total time end-consumer devices are needed. Less greenhouse gas emissions could be achieved either through higher upload speed or through decreased movie size. Using the computer for other purposes while uploading also lowers the climate impact from P2P, says Elisabeth Hochschorner.

Elisabeth Hochschorner’s conclusions are based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) presented at the 3rd NorLCA Symposium 15-16 September 2011 in Helsinki. The study is part of the larger project “Next generation media” conducted by KTH (CSC/Media) in collaboration with TeliaSonera.

Stockholm Green Hackathon

Green HackathonDevelopers, researchers and students meet up in Stockholm for the first Green Hackathon. Its mission is to develop prototypes of web and IT solutions for a sustainable and resilient future. The code camp takes place October 21-22 at KTH and lasts for 24 hours.
